In the Wurm forum I saw an old discussion about a canal / tunnel between the lake and the ocean:

What's the current status of this project?

The project was dropped. The first tunnel plan was deemed unfeasible because the dirt layer was extremely hard to reach and there were deeds blocking all of the coast. The second tunnel construction (south end of the lake) got going, but was forced to stop after the miners ran into a mine despite warnings.

And that is what happens when insufficient planning and scouting is done.
